The city of Manchester is just one of ten boroughs of the Greater Manchester conurbation, the others being Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan and the City of Salford. Together, these boroughs hold a population of around 2.5 million.
Among the most notable neighbourhoods for property seekers in the Manchester area are:
Salford – A city in its own right, Salford also benefits from its proximity to
Manchester’s city centre. Salford Quays has been the focus of much waterside redevelopment, with the BBC among its most high-profile new arrivals, and the area would be ideal for buyers looking for contemporary city living space.
Didsbury – An affluent and green suburb south of the city centre, Didsbury, and particularly Didsbury Village, is among the region’s most desirable property hotspots. Good schools make it a desirable location for buyers with families.
Chorlton-cum-Hardy – Neighbouring Didsbury, this is another affluent,
predominantly middle-class area, with many open spaces and a great community feel.
Fallowfield – Located just south of the city centre, Fallowfield has a large
student population, and consequently a lively rental market. The area also boasts some excellent schools and frequent public transport links to the city’s heart.
Hulme – Within easy striking distance of Deansgate, Hulme has undergone a lot of redevelopment in recent years and is one of the focal points for young professional buyers aspiring to a city centre lifestyle.
Rusholme – Another neighbourhood popular with students, there is also a large Asian community here. The standard of schools is high, and there are a number of Manchester’s hospitals close at hand.
Sale – Southwest of Manchester, in the borough of Trafford, Sale is an affluent
and green satellite town with good transport links into the city. A water park and arts centre are among the amenities that make it a popular homebuyers’ choice.
Altrincham – To the south of Sale is Altrincham, a similarly desirable property hotspot on the outskirts of Manchester. A tram link through the city and proximity to the Peak District combine to give homebuyers here great access to both the bustling metropolis and unspoilt countryside.
